Thanksgiving is my favorite national holiday. It is not focused around the obligatory(bad) gift, it’s secular, and the abundance of flavors, color, and creativity in the food and recipes cannot be beat.
I started creating my Thanksgiving menu over 25 years ago, in a 2 bedroom duplex with a very small kitchen. The size of my kitchen didn’t matter, nor did the fact that I only had one oven. I was organized, made lists, prepped and did as much as I could in advance. My pumpkin soup and this cranberry sauce remain the two constants on my holiday table. Today, I may have a slightly larger kitchen, two ovens, an extra fridge, but the joy of this holiday remains the same.
Regardless, making a Thanksgiving meal requires organization, lots of prep, and time management. I do as much as I can in advance. This cranberry sauce can be made a week in advance, Pie crusts are made and frozen, soups are made 2 days prior, and all veggies are cleaned, blanched, and chopped the weekend before.
In the meantime, make this cranberry sauce. It’s chunky, fruity, tart, not too sweet and can be eaten all year around. Obviously it is delish with turkey, but it’s just as good with chicken, pork, and it is the best condiment on almost any sandwich.

My Thanksgiving traditions are to spend time with family and enjoy each other’s company, and of course picking the perfect turkey. I especially enjoy the stuffing. There are so many wonderful ways to make it.
I “like” The Urban Baker on Facebook.
Our Thanksgiving tradition is to make homemade cranberry jam that we use on Thanksgiving day and also give out to all of our family and friends. They look forward to it as much as we do.
Susan, cranberry jam sounds wonderful. Good idea for holiday gifts….hmmm you have me thinking!

I love thanksgiving dinner with my family! And anything with pumpkin belongs on my table. 🙂
Julie – I just started liking pumpkin pie. Now I crave it! I get why you like all things pumpkin!

I love either my mother’s stuffing or my cornbread casserole or pumpkin bread. We get together with as much family as possible and any other people without a place to go. This year the count is at 44!
Oooh… I have never made cranberry sauce with raspberries but it sounds fabulous! The kitchen timer sounds fabuloous too!! Hmm… family traditions – everyone has to say what they are thankful for before we eat – as for traditional foods – definitely my mother’s hashed potatoes in cream!
Hashed potatoes in cream – do tell, Nancy. Sounds kind of amazing!

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday after Christmas. Christmas will always be my fave because it reminds me of my dad. Thanks for letting us know about the cool gadget, I’ll definitely check it out!
What a beautiful cranberry relish. To me, there is no replacement for fresh cranberry sauce. Plus, it’s so quick and easy to make. One of our favorite holiday traditions is ending the day with a family walk. It’s time spent together, plus it’s help work off some of that Thanksgiving feast.
Dara – I love the family walk idea. I may have to incorporate that into my Thanksgiving day!
our thanksgiving traditions have evolved over the 6 past years. we now have two thanksgiving dinners. one in santa barbara with my family and a second one in LA with paul’s parents and some of our friends. we do this is so we don’t have to alternate every other year my parent’s, paul’s parent’s. now that our son is in college it is even more important for us to do it here in LA so he has a chance to be with his friends. when we are in santa barbara, the meal is very traditional but when we are here in LA we go a bit more southern style- starting with the turkey- paul deep fries the turkey!!! wow it is so incredible.
I remember that southern style fried turkey from last year…i may have to rear my head on over to your house this year. dying to try that. xx
come on by- would love to share with you!
xoxo
My favorite tradition is having our small family all together for a glorious day.
I don’t really have any unique Thanksgiving traditions besides spending time with my family. My favorite Thanksgiving food is simply masked rutabaga with butter salt and pepper. Simple….but WONDERFUL!!

Our Thanksgiving tradition is everyone pitches in to put it together and we all pitch in to clean it up afterwards. I’m really looking forward to my mom’s mashed potatoes and my dad’s deep-fried turkey!
I follow via RSS feeds/email!
Pies are our biggest tradition….chocolate pecan being the winner. Also Vegetarian mushroom gravy…loved by all.
This sauce looks awesome. It’s so bad that Thanksgiving is really not important up in here because it’s sounds like a perfect celebration to me!
My dad’s potato rolls are a must every year!

Sounds delicious Susan. I really like your addition of raspberries and apples. I too love Thanksgiving. My favorite holiday to cook for, and traditions are so important. Our family cranberry recipe has been around for probably 50 years, but I’ll have to try your recipe. It’s fun to share traditions!
Sally – it is fun to share traditions. However, I have to say, sharing the weekend with you this past weekend, was pretty darn great as well! A 50 year old cranberry sauce – intrigued
The raspberries are a great idea, Susan!
love sweet potato – sans marshmallow!
My favorite Thanksgiving food is stuffing, followed closely by butternut squash! And I love having my kids back in the house.
It’s not Thanksgiving to me w/o roots of some sort. I like the metaphor. Great meeting you at IFBC this weekend. GREG
likewise, Greg. I am loving your blog. The recipes and stories are wonderful, however it is your candor and humor that I am loving!!!
Beautiful relish! To answer your question, my favorite Thanksgiving food is cornbread dressing. I fell in love with it a few years back and now I just can’t get enough!

Our Thanksgiving traditions have always included the family getting together and eating a LOT of food, as well as going around the table and having everyone say what they’re thankful for. Then we’d play board games until everyone fell asleep. 🙂
Can’t wait to try your cranberry relish recipe ! It’s exactly what I was looking for AND I can make it in advance ……can’t ask for more than that ! I also love this holiday and it’s all about the “roots” for me too!
I never would have thought to add raspberries to cranberry relish, but it’s a great idea. I may have to try it for my next batch 🙂
I wish I was so organized to have everything prepped so far in advance! I guess that’s why my Thanksgiving tradition is running around like a mad woman trying to get everything done in time. lol
sylvie – i have to be organized – makes me crazy to not have my “lists” and my “to do’s”. I am type A, but a flexible type A!
My 83 year old mother insists on making her cranberry sauce each Thanksgiving which everyone loves. I am looking forward to trying your recipe and seeing what her response will be. My husband’s family only has the canned cranberry so I know what I will be taking to that dinner this year! Thank you!
Hi Mary – I sure hope this lives up to your mom’s, traditional dish. I am anxious to hear how it all goes down!
