Best resources for ribbons

I receive a lot of emails asking me where I get my boxes, my ribbons, freezer storage containers, and even some of my props. Over the years, I have always gifted my baked creations. It is not my style to put some cookies on a white paper plate, throw some plastic wrap over it and call it a day. Thank goodness for the Internet. Via the Internet, I am able to find just what I need beyond my local Box City.

Having a design business for 17 years, I was totally and completely into aesthetics. When someone walked in the door of my factory or my retail stores, it always had the “wow” factor. This wasn’t manipulated or conscious, it is just how I operate. And being organized and having a place for everything helped. Amongst all the chaos, I had to find order. Juggling 26 employees, a 6,000 square foot factory, 1 local retail space, 4 franchises across the country and Canada, 2 babies at home, was not an easy task. And at times, I wasn’t quite sure how I got through my days.

Hence, surrounding myself with beautiful things, creating something from nothing, and meeting fascinating and interesting people kept me going. Starting this blog nearly three years ago has given me some of those same experiences. The creativity in developing a recipe, creating the dish, photo styling it, photographing it, and then writing about it can all go back to aesthetics and design. Blending ingredients can be compared to creating a paint color. Picking fabrics to go with that color palate is similar to how the food gets styled. Finally, presentation. Admit it, we all love receiving something wrapped into a pretty little box, tied with a bow. I know I do. Makes one feel special. Packaging up a box of homemade cookies, jam, candy, or a cake should be treated no different.

Hello!,
this is Ana, the Spanish teacher who wrote to you about the trip to Los Angeles. Well, I’m back now in Spain and I can only say it in big fat capital letters: I LOVE LOS ANGELES!
I didn’t want to come back and stay longer, maybe a year or two, hehe. I’ve fallen in love with California I’m afraid. The beautiful weather, the oh so nice and kind people, the quiteness (oh yes, we, the Mediterranean people, are too noisy) the huge green areas and parks, the amazing cultural variety, the house and garden neighbourhoods (Spain is a small country, so people tend to live in buildings)…
I knew that I would like it, but I didn’t imagine so much.
I couldn’t make it to go to K-Zo. I tried hard, but as I was accompaigning my husband and two clients who were visiting a factory in Oxnard I couldn’t decide by myself. Nevertheless, we ate in so many beautiful places: Urth Café (love love love it), the Cheesecake Factory in the Grove (what a beautiful shopping center), Sabor in Oxnard, Ugo in Berverly Hills and so many others I really liked.
I want to say thank you for your recommendations and kindness. Maybe I’ll come back soon to stay longer, I planning to prepare my doctorate and do it in USA would be a nice option.
Hi Ana from Spain! So glad you had such a wonderful experience. I happen to adore Spain. I traveled in 1990 and spent about 3 weeks (not long enough). We went from Madrid to Toledo to Sevilla, Nerha, and then Granada. I loved, loved, loved Sevilla and Nerha. The food – oh so good and I happen to think your aprartment lined streets are charming and beautiful. Such great history.
If you do choose to come back, I will meet you for a delicious Sushi lunch! It’s a date! Thanks for sharing your travel experience with me…Urth is one of my all time favorites as well. We live super close to the one in BH and sometimes I will make my kids get on their bike and ride over there!!!
Hi again!,
I’m from Seville, where I currently live. It’s true European countries are beautiful, with so much history, whith these crazy city maps where streets seem mazes, the delicious food and the old houses. I do love it as well, but I guess this is the reason why USA has made such a big impression on me, because it’s so different and interesting.
I know very well Granada and Nerja. In fact, Granada is one of my favourite cities ever. It’s amazing and it’s one the best places in Spain to go on tapas.
During our trip to LA we met with a friend we met when we lived in London (some years ago). He also lives super close to Urth Café in BH, actually this is the one we had dinner.
Next time, we’ll surely have this Sushi lunch! So the same if you decide to visit the south of Spain, I know many nice places to visit and eat.
I knew I was spelling Nerja wrong, but was too lazy to look it up! Let’s chat soon! x
I love this! I totally agree that everything is better with a bow : ) And These are great resources that I’ll definitely be coming back to.
This is a wonderful post, I’m bookmarking it right now. The Internet is such an incredible resource, but it can be overwhelming. Your overview is invaluable. I send cookie gifts every holiday season, and I always like to package them differently (and safely) each year. For my blog, I am always looking for new props to make it more visually interesting. These sites will be such fun to explore. Thanks!
Hi Sue – I started baking for the holidays about 25 years ago and I now find it really hard to buy a store bought gift during the holidays. It is always so appreciated and enjoyed. So glad you too, bake at the holidays. I would love to see your goodies on your fabulous site!

Brilliant round up of inspirational design. I know what I like but I have a hard time finding it some times (design wise). You seem to have the midas touch! I need to follow you around on some shopping trip some time. (I’ll start saving)….

These are such great tips! Everything looks so beautiful! gilli
Such a fun post Susan! Thanks! Some new places to add to my ever-expandining list. I found Nashville Wraps awhile ago. What a resource. Agreed that any food gift feels more special and tasty when packaged beautifully. Hmm, you have me already thinking ahead to fall and holidays. I’m not yet ready for that. Each time I read a post I get more and more impressed with you! I’ve got to drive to LA for some prop shopping, lunch and fun. Maybe September when I have a break with my clients.
Wow – Sally, thanks so much. I feel the same about you. After September 10th(my eldest son’s bar mitzvah -300 guests/2 parties and a very tempermental 13 year old), I am a free woman! I would love to spend the day with you! Cannot wait to plan a great outing!xx
You are just wonderful, did you know that? How generous of you to share such precious info with all of us! If I ever travel to the States I will sure bring lots of pretty things home with me.
Thank you, Patricia! I have found great resources over the years so why not share it? The next time I order, I will let you know and maybe we could gang our orders and then I could ship yours to you, in Brazil! xx
